In the world of luxury watches condition isn’t just a detail it’s everything. At Kettle Club we believe in total transparency when it comes to assessing, valuing and presenting pre owned Rolex watches. Whether you’re investing in your first Rolex or refining a seasoned collection, understanding condition grading is essential. That’s why we’ve developed a meticulous, professional and industry aligned grading system that informs every Rolex we sell.

The Evolution of Rolex Grading

Rolex has long been revered for its precision, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal. But as the global demand for pre owned Rolex watches surged over the past two decades, so did the need for a consistent, reliable method of evaluating their condition.

In the early days condition was largely judged on aesthetics and timekeeping, a polished case, a ticking movement and a service history. But today grading goes far beyond surface level assessments. It requires horological knowledge, technical testing and a deep understanding of Rolex’s production eras, parts authenticity and material evolution.

At Kettle Club we combine expert human insight with digital precision. Each watch undergoes a comprehensive inspection process because a 30 year old Submariner with original patina may be more valuable than a polished one that’s lost its character.

Why Rolex Condition Grading Matters

Market Value: The difference between a “very good” and “excellent” condition watch can represent thousands of pounds in value. Originality, surface wear, polishing history and component replacement can all affect a watch market price and long term appreciation.

Buyer Confidence: A clearly defined grading scale gives buyers the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. When purchasing a high value item like a Rolex, buyers deserve clarity not guesswork.

Seller Transparency: For sellers, accurate grading ensures their watch is valued fairly. It sets realistic expectations while protecting the integrity of the market.

What We Examine When Grading

1. Material & Surface Condition
We assess the case, bracelet, bezel and clasp for scratches, dents, polishing or loss of original lines. Gold, steel, platinum and ceramic are each evaluated by material specific standards.

2. Dial & Hands
We look for dial condition, lume degradation, discoloration, fading and potential refinishing. Original dials and handsets add value even with patina.

3. Movement Health
All watches undergo timing tests, amplitude checks, power reserve verification and function testing. If service is needed we note it and adjust the grading accordingly.

4. Crystal & Crown
We check for scratches, chips and correct logo placement on sapphire crystals. Crowns are tested for threading, waterproofing and setting functionality.

5. Originality & Replacement Parts
Any replaced parts are documented, whether the bezel insert, dial, hands or bracelet. Only Rolex parts are acceptable for high grade classifications.

6. Water Resistance (if applicable)
Where appropriate, we conduct pressure tests to confirm waterproof seals, especially on sports models.

7. Service History
A documented service history (especially from Rolex authorised centres) adds value. We review whether the movement has been serviced, cleaned or oiled.

Our Grading Process

Step 1: Authentication
Using serial numbers, movement engraving, reference checks and in house databases we verify that every Rolex is 100% genuine.

Step 2: Functional Testing
We test movement accuracy, complications (chronograph, GMT, date), power reserve and winding performance.

Step 3: Cosmetic Evaluation
Under magnification we inspect all visible components including dial condition, bracelet stretch, lug sharpness and surface marks.

Step 4: Photography & Documentation
Each watch is professionally photographed and fully documented, including service history, provenance and any modifications.

Step 5: Grading Report
A final grade is assigned by our specialists, combining objective testing with expert judgment.

Care Tips Based on Condition Grade

Like New / Unworn:

  • Avoid polishing to preserve original finish
  • Store in original box or a dry watch safe
  • Service only when needed, as per Rolex service interval (approx. every 10 years)

Very Good / Good:

  • Clean gently with a microfiber cloth after wear
  • Have seals tested annually for waterproof models
  • Avoid excessive polishing to maintain case lines and value

Fair / Vintage:

  • Avoid water exposure unless resealed
  • Keep servicing records and retain original parts if replaced
  • Consult an expert before restoration, some wear adds value

FAQs: Rolex Condition Grading

Q: Can a watch be graded ‘Very Good’ even if it’s been polished?
A: Yes, if polishing was done professionally and didn’t compromise case geometry, a watch can still be classed as Very Good or higher.

Q: Does a missing box or papers affect the grade?
A: No. Condition grading is based on the watch itself. However, box and papers can increase the value, even if they don’t influence the grade.

Q: How does bracelet stretch affect grading?
A: Bracelet stretch is considered in both cosmetic and structural evaluation. Excessive stretch may move a watch into the “Good” or “Fair” category.

Q: Are replacement parts acceptable?
A: Only genuine Rolex parts are acceptable. If a part has been replaced with an original Rolex component, it does not necessarily lower the grade, but it will be noted.

Q: Do you pressure test every watch?
A: We test water resistance on all watches where appropriate, especially on Submariners, GMTs and other Oyster cased models. For vintage watches, we advise caution.
